Maura might be on her way back to the holding cells, but there was no way to contain her brother. He remained at the scene, looking entirely too cheerful for someone standing next to a corpse. Or rather, floating. His feet skimmed the ground, a breeze stirring my hair, and he grinned cheekily at us.

“You can try putting handcuffs on me if you like,” he said to my brother. “It’d be funny.”

“Don’t try me,” said Ramsey, who looked as if he wished he’d volunteered to take Maura back to prison himself instead of staying behind with her troublesome ghostly brother. “I realise you aren’t bound by mortal constraints, but—”

“Not bound by mortal constraints,” he repeated. “That’s a nice way of saying ‘dead.’ I’m stealing it.”

Ramsey’s scowl deepened. “You should know, I carry sage in my pockets.”

“Ooh, I’m terrified.” Mart lifted his hands, and a gust of air ruffled my hair.

From what I’d seen of his ghostly powers so far, he might be able to give Grandma a run for her money, which was mildly worrying to contemplate. If this level of mobility was what we could expect from her in future, I might have to ask Maura to perform an exorcism after all. Assuming she didn’t end up in jail indefinitely.

Ramsey turned his accusing stare onto me instead. “Why exactly did you make a deal with this ghost?”

“It wasn’t intentional,” I said. “He’d already escaped jail—”

“With your familiar’s help.”

Tansy ducked her head behind my neck, and I sighed.

“Not my idea. You must have realised keeping a ghost locked up was an exercise in futility,” I said.

“It wasn’t intended to be permanent.” He studied the shifter’s body and furrowed his brow. “The most likely culprit who summoned this supposed demon is a Reaper. You don’t lose your abilities when you die, is that correct?”

Mart looked affronted. “I certainly didn’t summon any demons. I find them to be incredibly dull conversationalists.”

“You know about them, though,” I ventured. “Same as your sister. Demons are—what? Overpowered ghosts that can possess people?”

“They used to be human?” Even Ramsey looked curiously at Mart; I assumed his desire to know more about the enemy had temporarily outweighed his need to maintain control. “Is that right?”

“Once,” said Mart, with a distasteful expression on his face. “A while ago. They don’t have any traces of humanity left, which makes them rather bland, in my opinion.”

“You’ve had a lot of experience with demons, have you?” Ramsey said.

Mart turned his back. “I’m not answering any questions until your sister keeps her word.”

“You want to hear what he has to say, don’t you?” I asked Ramsey. “He only takes payment in the form of hot showers, but we can arrange that, can’t we?”

“That’s more like it.” Mart spun back around, a grin on his face. “You do need to hear what I have to say. If you don’t want to listen to my sister, I’m the best option. The better option, in fact.”

Ramsey scowled. “I am not paying for a hotel room for a ghost.
